Andy, you are the founder of Yaya Maria’s. What is special about Yaya Maria’s?
Every Yaya Maria’s product delivers on two promises. First, it’s made of only good ingredients. Every ingredient is so natural, even your great-grandmother would understand it. And second, the products really work when used as directed. Other natural products often disappoint because they’re not formulated properly. Yaya Maria’s products work even better than the leading conventional brand.
Our formulas work so well because we build them around natural ingredients that have been scientifically proven to work. Everyone who’s involved in the process comes from an academic research background. When we’re formulating a new product, the first step is always a deep dive into peer-reviewed research. That’s how we discovered bakuchiol, the star ingredient in our anti-aging serums.
Tell me more about bakuchiol.
Bakuchiol comes from a plant called Psoralea corylifolia. Although it’s been used for a long time in Chinese medicine, scientists recently started to study it. They learned that bakuchiol has a lot of extremely positive benefits for the skin. It’s an antioxidant, it reduces skin discoloration, and it soothes the skin. Most importantly, it has some pretty powerful anti-aging properties. It has been proven to significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And it has no known side effects.
Why do Yaya Maria’s anti-aging products use bakuchiol instead of retinol?
Retinol is a synthetic chemical anti-aging ingredient. A lot of brands use it because it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and it’s a relatively inexpensive ingredient. If you’ve ever tried a retinol product, though, you may have experienced retinol’s side effects: it tends to dry out the skin, and it can cause redness, flaking, and pain. Bakuchiol, by contrast, has no side effects. And yet it’s equally as effective as retinol at reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
The only “downside” of bakuchiol is that it’s a very expensive ingredient, so it cuts into profits. That’s why other brands use only a tiny amount of it, usually no more than 0.5% or 1%. By contrast, Yaya Maria’s Anti-Aging Serum is 2% bakuchiol. We can do that because we’re a small company with no shareholders. That gives us the freedom to give our customers a more potent concentration of bakuchiol, and more positive results.
Tell me about how you got the idea for Yaya Maria’s products.
When I was going through cancer treatment in my 30s, I wanted to rid my life of unnecessary chemicals. So I started reading the ingredient labels on every bottle in my home. And actually, that’s something I recommend everyone should do. You’ll be as shocked as I was. Brands that I thought were “natural” were actually loaded with unpronounceable ingredients, some of them pretty dangerous.
So my wife did a lot of reading, and she taught herself how to make every kind of product for our home—dish soap, face serums, everything. She was very methodical. She documented her observations for each attempt, and she tweaked the recipes again and again, in probably hundreds of experiments. Her products ended up being of such high quality that they worked even better than the chemical stuff we used to buy. She had no interest in starting a business because she has her own career, but she gave me her blessing to do it. That’s how Yaya Maria’s was born.
What motivated you to make Yaya Maria’s a cruelty-free company?
Any empathetic person who’s spent time with animals knows that animals clearly can feel happiness and distress. Science proved that decades ago, and new studies are coming out all the time showing that animals experience even more than we imagined. Unfortunately, the laws haven’t been updated to reflect the science. Although corporations are now legal persons, the law still considers animals as property—more like pieces of furniture than conscious beings. Until Congress gives animals the rights they deserve, it’s up to consumers and companies with a conscience to say “no” to practices like animal testing.
